Botanical Garden of the Ozarks
Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is a beautiful place to visit. Located in greater Springdale, Arkansas on land donated by the family of Dr. J. Neely Johnson, this botanical garden features more than two miles of beautifully landscaped pathways through formal and informal gardens displaying a wide variety of plants from around the world. The Botanical Garden has been designated as one of America's first-ever "Garden Cities" and is open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset.
How did the garden begin?
In 1967, Mrs. Johnson donated the land to the city with the stipulation that a botanical garden is established and maintained on it. The first gardens were planted in 1969 by volunteers from the Northwest Arkansas Master Gardeners Association.
A formal rose garden was dedicated in 1971, and additional gardens have been added since then. In 1978, the Botanical Garden Society of Northwest Arkansas was founded to raise funds and promote the garden as a visitor destination. In 1979, it became an affiliate member of the American Public Gardens Association (APGA).
In 1981, Dr. J. Neely Johnson died at age 87 on January 19th in Springdale after being ill for some time with cancer. He was buried in the garden.
